There are a few key ingredients when it comes to being successful. One of the main ingredients is persistence. Being persistent is simply never never never…..never never never never giving up! Giving up before success happens is like cutting success off at the knees.
I remember once when I was a kid, I was tinkering around with something and I couldn’t get it to work. But I kept on trying and trying different ways. My mom’s boyfriend at the time said to her, “He sure is a persistent kid”. I didn’t really know what the word persistent meant at the time but I figured it out pretty quickly. It means keep trying and never giving up.
So much of life is persistence. If I’m pursuing something worthwhile, I get kind of a “tunnel vision”. I’m totally focused on what I want to accomplish. It’s sort of like, me versus it! I feel a drive to “win”.
Persistence is one of those intangible things you can’t see but you can see the manifestation of it. It’s an internal drive that shows itself externally by the results.
I like the example Thomas Edison gave throughout his life. He personified persistence at its best. When something didn’t work, he tried another way to get it to work. If that didn’t work, he tried another, then another, then another until it did. The important point here is that he kept on trying and he tried different ways. To simply continue trying something the same way and expecting a different result is insanity. We’ve all heard that before.
Being persistent helps make the impossible, possible. Have you ever heard the saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time”.
Anything worthwhile doesn’t come easily. It takes a continued effort. Persistence means not only keep trying, but to be flexible in your approach.
So how does one become persistent?
I think the first step is you need to “Believe”
- Believe in yourself- No one started anything the first time as an expert. But they knew they could be persistent in learning and applying what they wanted to accomplish it.
- Believe what you are doing is worthwhile
The second step, in my opinion is to “View Obstacles As A Way To Find Solutions”
No matter how many times you stumble, keep getting up to try again. The joy of success isn’t just reaching an end goal. A lot of the joy comes from the struggles of the journey when you can look back and say to yourself that you gave it your all. That you never gave up even when an obstacle was blocking the path between you and where you want to be.
What’s the third step? Be enthusiastic!
Enthusiasm can carry you a long way. Enthusiasm drives you to continue on when everyone else says you’re crazy or you are wasting your time. Enthusiasm also gets you to take that first step on the path to persistence. I believe everyone that has been successful and done something great has been enthusiastic. Look at all the examples throughout history. The great explorers, scientists, leaders, and inventors had a passion about what they wanted to accomplish.
Step #4- Never Give Up
Never giving up is what holds it all together. Success is NEVER achieved by quitting! Think about all the people that could have been successful if they hadn’t given up too early. The sad thing is that they probably don’t even know that success was just around the corner but they stopped short of it.
I always think about how many great music bands there are in the world. But you’ve never heard of them because they gave up before they made it to the “big time”.
I’d guess there are a lot more great bands you’ve never heard of than you have heard of.
So, NEVER GIVE UP!
